Autumn tips
Tips for autumn
Hedgehogs

In autumn, hedgehogs eat themselves full to go into hibernation as fat as possible.
Do you have a garden? Then leave some leaves and twigs in a pile under a bush or hedge. This way you create a sheltered spot. Lots of tile in your garden? Replace them with grass and plants.
Better for everyone!
Tips:
- Make or buy a hedgehog house. Make sure the entrance is narrow enough that no cats can enter;
- Any additional feeding? Hedgehogs love cat food;
- Put down a low bowl of water.
Chocolate

We will be eating more chocolate again during the dark days, but chocotray is toxic to cats and dogs. The guilty substance is theobromine. It can cause cardiac arrhythmias, strokes, tremors and death.
How toxic chocolate is for your dog depends on the quantity, your dog's weight and the type of chocolate. Therefore, give as much information as possible to your vet.
Possible symptoms, including:
- Vomiting;
- Diarrhoea;
- Restlessness.
Did your dog eat chocolate?
If so, contact your vet immediately. The vet can make your dog vomit using an injection or even empty the stomach.
Snip

Yes, the snipe used to be on a 100 guilder note. Around November (and March), many snipes migrate across our country. We therefore see an increase in the number of reports during this period.
The snipe has a 360-degree field of vision. As a result, they see danger coming quickly, but have difficulty estimating distances. Consequence: a collision with e.g. a window. Many snipes are also blinded by the low-hanging sun.
Found a snipe:
- Often, after a blow, a bird will recover on its own with a few hours of rest;
- If not, injured, traffic or many cats? Then we will collect the snipe to take to the Resort or vet;
- Place the snipe in a box or put the box over the snipe. Watch your eyes with the long beak and don't hold the animal for long. They don't handle stress well.
Forest

Wonderful walks in the woods like this, but there are a few things to watch out for as a dog owner.
Dry your dog off after a walk through the rain or after a swim. The water can already be quite cold. Keep an eye out for fleas and ticks. Make sure your dog does not eat acorns, mushrooms or chestnuts. Has your dog eaten a mushroom? If possible, take a photo of the mushroom with you to the vet.
Acorns, mushrooms and chestnuts:
- Acorns are hugely toxic because they contain tannic acid (tannin). An excess of this substance causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps;
- Many mushrooms are poisonous;
- Chestnuts (or pine cones) can cause blockages in the intestinal tract.
